On Saturday night……

Coventry Blaze 3 Fife Flyers 4 – Elite League

Flyers made it back to back wins at Skydome for the first time since season 2018/19.

Ben Hawerchuk scored the Flyers first short-handed goal of the season – the last player to score a shortie for the Flyers was Chris Gerrie against the Guildford Flames in December 2022.

In all EIHL competitions the Flyers have scored 64 short-handed goals whilst conceding 94.

Troy Lajeunesse scored with 2 seconds of regulation remaining to send the game to overtime – this is not the latest buzzer beater by a Flyers player in all EIHL competitions as Mike Cazzola hit a leveller at 59:59 to tie the game 4-4 with the Glasgow Clan on 9^th September 2018 before the Flyers went on to win the game in a shootout.

There have been a number of goals scored by the Flyers in the final second of EIHL games but none others that have had a meaningful impact on the outcome of the game, the list is below with special mention to Justin Fox who hit the short handed empty netter against the Storm.

It was also the Flyers first win in overtime this season and all time in all EIHL competitions they now have 30 wins and 29 losses.

Coventry remain winless at home in league competition this season although this was their first point in five games at the Skydome.

Blaze scored their fastest goal of the season after just 20 seconds, this beat their previous best by 1 second which was against the Flyers in their last visit to the Midlands.

Both Kyle Osterberg and Troy Lajeunesse extended their points streaks to five games.

Fife Flyers 4 Coventry Blaze 3 – Elite League

Collin Shirley’s opening goal, timed at 69 seconds, was the fastest scored by the Flyers this season.

The win was Flyers third consecutive which ties their best streak so far this season and it also halted a run of back to back defeats on home ice.

It is also the third consecutive win this season against the Blaze, the last time they beat the Blaze in three or more consecutive games was a sequence of 7 wins between 2016 and 2017.

Kyle Osterberg extended his points streak to 6 games which is a team high for the season so far.

There are now only six ever present players on the roster this season – Shane Owen, Jonas Emmerdahl, Aleksi Mäkelä, Max Humitz, Kyle Osterberg and Collin Shirley.

Flyers have conceded the most first period goals and are tied with the Belfast Giants for most third period goals scored.
