Weekend Preview – Week 6

WEEK 6 of the 2024/25 Elite Ice Hockey League season and the Flyers get things started early with two midweek match ups. On Wednesday night they welcome the Belfast Giants to Fife Ice Arena for their second visit on Challenge Cup duty before making their second visit to Cardiff to meet the Devils in a league clash.

The Flyers and Giants met on the opening weekend of the season and since then Belfast have proven to be a tough nut to crack as they sit top of the Challenge Cup group section with a 100% record and are second in the league table standings having dropped a single point in their opening three games. After winning in Fife the Giants hosted the Dundee Stars the following weekend and the visitors almost caused an upset as they took the home side the distance before the Giants won it 6-5 in overtime. The following weekend there was no such difficulties as the Stars were shutout at the Dundee Ice Arena before the Giants opened up their league campaign with a convincing 7-3 win on the road in Manchester the following Saturday. The next night the Giants visited the Sheffield Steelers and in an epic encounter they fought hard with a short bench to get a point in a shootout loss. Last weekend the Giants hosted the Cardiff Devils and after trailing to the only goal of the game they hit three late goals to take both the points. Following their meeting with the Flyers the Giants are once again in Scotland on Challenge Cup duty this weekend when they meet the Glasgow Clan on Saturday night before both teams head west for a return match up at the SSE on Sunday.

The Giants have won on their last five visits to the Fife Ice Arena in Challenge Cup business. During that time they have outscored the Flyers 5-15 and have recorded two shut outs.

This will be the second meeting between the Flyers and Devils in the league this season with both being at the Vindico Arena. Since meeting the Flyers on Saturday 21st September the Devils were then in action at home the following Friday where they dropped a point in the Challenge Cup as the Manchester Storm, who were never behind, won 6-5 in overtime. Since then it has been league business for the Devils with a trip the following night to meet Glasgow Clan in their home opener. The Devils won 3-1 and last weekend they continued with a stretch of road games when first up they visited Belfast and held a lead for most of the game before succumbing in the third period to lose 3-1. On Sunday night they were in Guildford and in a late late show they snatched both the points with a 3-2 win with a goal in the final minute. This weekend the Devils play three games in three nights starting with the visit of the Flyers before they travel to Nottingham and then host the Dundee Stars on Sunday night.

Lucas Chiodo has goals in three of his last four games against the Cardiff Devils.
