The History of Ayr Ice HockeyPlans have now been completed for an exhibition to display the history of Ayr Ice Hockey. Since the beginning of the sport in Ayr back in 1939 at the old Beresford Terrace Rink to the present day at the Limekiln Road Rink this exposition is hoping to capture the magical moments during these past 75 years, covering the Raiders, Spitfires, Hurricanes, Balmorals, Rangers, Bruins and Eagles.

2014 is particularly appropriate, for not only is it the 75th anniversary of the start of the sport in Ayr, but is the 85th anniversary of the founding of Ayr's first ice hockey team - THE DOONSIDE ICE HOCKEY CLUB who played their games at Glasgow's former Crossmyloof rink in 1929

For the past 4 years two former Ayr players Eric Young and Stewart Hendrie have been hosting an annual AYR ICE HOCKEY LEGENDS DINNER to which special memories are shared by former players, team officials and builders of the sport in Ayr. During this event several individuals are nominated to the Ayr Ice Hockey Hall of Fame while others are commended for their efforts to the service of Ice Hockey in Ayr.

To complement the work of Eric and Stewart, former Ayr Bruins' player Jim Graves decided a hockey exhibition would take the awareness of the sport to the next level. Jim went on to say: "Eric and Stewart do a great job and their efforts are most appreciated. The idea basically grew from the fact that we only meet once a year for several hours and then go home. I felt the sport needed a place to showcase the game to the local people of Ayr and recognise those who gave so much to the game here. I am well aware of the great efforts by many at Junior and Recreation level down at Limekiln Road.

"British Ice Hockey journalist and  historian David Gordon has come on board this project and I can't thank him enough. David has been assisting me from the beginning as he has a wealth of Ayr Ice Hockey knowledge and his input has been invaluable. I am very grateful for his support."

The date for this exhibition will be the beginning of October 2014 and will be held at Ayr's Carnegie Library. Both Jim and David are very grateful to South Ayrshire Council for allowing the Carnegie Library for this show. Special thanks to Aileen Cowan from the Library for her efforts in seeing this project would take place. Currently the idea is for a 1 month exhibition, but there may be an opportunity to have a permanent display on show elsewhere in the town.

The size of this exhibition is going to rest entirely on the public, for Jim and David are asking everyone out there to search their cupboards, lofts, sheds or storage facilities for anything relating to the past 75 years of Ayr Ice Hockey (Anything from the Doonside team of 85 years ago would be  a real bonus!) Photos, Team Jerseys, Equipment, Signed Sticks or any item that one deems relevant to the sport would be most appreciated. It is hoped that former players, officials and hockey fans will come forward with gear to make this a Super Show.

IT MUST BE STATED THAT ALL DONATED ITEMS REMAIN THE PROPERTY OF THAT PERSON WHO FORWARDS THAT PIECE TO THE EXHIBITION

PLEASE NOTE: We cannot guarantee that all donated items will be included in the exhibition as it will be entirely based on the availability of space and suitability to the display.

The promoters would like to ask the public to come down to the Carnegie Library with their Ice Hockey Item. Once there they will sign over their donation, which will be recorded and a receipt given. Assurances will be given that they can retrieve their piece or pieces at anytime during Library hours, for they remain the property owners.
