The Fife Flyers Ice Hockey Club are delighted to announce the signing of former NHL defenceman Simon Després.
A former 1st round draft pick, Simon made 222 appearances in the NHL registering 50 points (7 goals plus 43 assists) icing with the Pittsburgh Penguins and Anaheim Ducks.
A highly experienced player, Simon has also iced in 143 AHL games as well as plying his trade in numerous top leagues across the world. Which includes seasons with HC Slovan Bratislava in the KHL, IK Oskarshamn in the SHL, Villacher SV in the ICEHL and a back to back championship winning stint with Eisbarën Berlin in the DEL.
Fans on this side of the pond will recognise Simon from his time with Elite Ice Hockey League (EIHL) rivals Nottingham Panthers and Glasgow Clan. Across two seasons in the EIHL, Simon iced in 111 games totalling 49 points (9 goals and 40 assists) in all competitions.
On signing in Fife, Simon commented: “I’m thrilled to join this group, and help them win some games.
“I’m a very competitive guy and I am embracing the challenge presented in front of me of turning this boat around and bringing it to the final four weekend in Nottingham.”
On signing Simon, Head Coach Jamie Russell said: “Simon will step in and give us a veteran presence and will add experience to our back end.
“He knows the league and should have a seamless transition.”
Fife Flyers President and GM Max Birbraer added: “As we look to strengthen all areas of the line up, we are pleased to secure Simon’s services.
“He brings experience and much needed play making ability to our line up as we look toward to getting our selfs back on track.”
