Weekend Recap – Week 9

On Wednesday night……

Sheffield Steelers 2  Fife Flyers 5  –  Elite League 

The Steelers extended their home winning streak against the Flyers to 17 consecutive matches. They have also now won their last 16 games against all EIHL opponents at the Utilita arena which is their 3rd longest home winning streak in their history and their best in their EIHL era.

The Flyers 18 shots on goal is a season low for a game.

It was the first time in 9 games that the Flyers have held a lead in a game and the second time this season that they have scored the first goal.

Congratulations to Aiden Wilson for his debut, he is the 17th player this season to take a bow for the Flyers.

The Flyers remained winless on the road this season after 8 games. Last season they lost 8 consecutive road games through November/December. To start a season the longest winless run on the road is 15 games in season 2011/12 with 13 decided in regulation.

The Flyers avoided equalling a record of being shutout in three consecutive road games that was set last season.

Sheffield have now scored both of this seasons Penalty Shot goals.

On Saturday night……

Belfast Giants  3  Fife Flyers 5  –  Challenge Cup 

Phélix Martineau stretched gois goals streak to 3 which equals Lucas Chiodo as highest on season. He is also the first player to have consecutive multi goal games which was also his third of the season.

The two power play goals given up equals a season high for the Flyers.

Congratulations to James Spence who scored his first goal for the Flyers.

The last British player to score for Flyers was Reece Cochrane on December 2nd 2022.

It was the first time the Flyers have both won the first period and held a first period lead on the road this season.

It was also the longest time in the last 14 games that the Flyers had held a lead in a game.

Drake Pilon and Maxim Musorov were ever presents so far this season and missed their first games – leaving only four players to have played all games, Michael Cichy, Lucas Chiodo, Phélix Martineau and Noah Delmas.

Giants were won 33 face offs to Flyers 10 – a minus 23 for Flyers which is their worst this season.

On Sunday night……

Fife Flyers 3  Nottingham Panthers 4   Shootout   – Elite League  

The Flyers despite a point took extended their winless streak to 10 matches.

The Flyers have lost their last two shootouts which have also been this season. Their overall record is now 31 wins and 30 losses with 1 draw (Challenge Cup) from shootout matches.

The Flyers third goal of the night by Lucas Chiodo was their 100th league goal at home against Panthers.

The Flyers have now won or tied eight of their last 10 periods of hockey in comparison to losing nine of the previous 10 periods.

Congratulations to Madi Dikhanbek who scored his first point for the Flyers.

Lucas Chiodo now has the active points streak for the team over the last 4 games – 6 is his and the team best for the season

The Flyers had a lead in a game for the third straight game, their best sequence so far this season.
