Todd Dutiaume

Last month the Elite Ice Hockey League confirmed that they would be losing the Edinburgh Capitals for the 2018/19 season after their ice contract with Murrayfield Ice Rink was not renewed.

Murrayfield Ice Rink awarded the ice contract to the Murrayfield Racers, but after their application to join the EIHL was rejected, the 2018/19 season will see no top flight hockey in the Scottish capital. The EIHL will run with 11 teams, resulting in a 3 team Gardiner Conference with Fife, Dundee Stars and Braehead Clan.

Last season Flyers were unbeaten against their Gardiner Conference rivals, winning 10 games on the way to scoring 61 goals.

Over the last 7 season which the Flyers and Capitals have battled in the Elite Ice Hockey League and Challenge Cup, Flyers have won 49 of their 68 competitive head to heads.

Head coach Todd Dutiaume said that the loss of their Scottish rivals is a huge blow "The loss of Edinburgh is a blow to Scottish ice hockey.

"Not having the Capitals in the top flight, where they belong, impacts not only their hockey community but certainly has a financial and emotional impact on the teams and supporters up north.

"The conference system had the league as close and as competitive as it has ever been."
