Fife Flyers vs Belfast Giants post game summary

Fife Flyers, sponsored by Arnold Clark Mercedes-Benz, hosted the Belfast Giants in their Challenge Cup 1/4 final 1st leg tie on Saturday evening at Fife Ice Arena.

Flyers went into Saturday's game without Team GB under 20's forward Chad Smith who was in action in a gold medal and promotion game in Dumfries. Todd Dutiaume's side have gone head-to-head with Adam Keefe's Belfast Giants on two occasions this season with the Giants having come out on top in both match-ups.

Both teams were evenly matched for the opening 10 minutes of the first period until two quick goals from Belfast through David Rutherford (10:43) and Colin Shields (10:58) put them ahead.

Flyers got themselves on the scoreboard at 13:43 when Evan Bloodoff converted on a Flyers powerplay to get it back to a 1 goal game.

Belfast scored their 3rd goal of the period when Darcy Murphy found a way beyond Andy Iles in the Flyers net at 16:22 sending the teams into the dressing rooms with the Giants leading 3-1 at the end of the first period.

Carlo Finucci got the Flyers back in the game early in the second period when he converted on the powerplay at 21:36 to make it a one goal game.

Danick Gauthier tied the game up at 26:13 when he fired the puck beyond Jackson Whistle after Chase Schaber was unable to convert a chance.

The period remained 3-3 as both teams headed to the dressing room at the end of the second period.

Flyers dominated the play in the 3rd period but were unable to capitalise and find a way beyond Jackson Whistle in the Belfast net who was equal to everything that came in his direction.

Despite their best efforts Flyers could not get themselves on the scoreboard in the final period and the game closed out 3-3 ahead of the return leg in Belfast on Tuesday 9th January.
