 Ricards Birzins signing announcement

Fife Flyers are delighted to confirm the signing of Latvian defenceman Ričards Birziņš. The 28 year old, 6’0", 192lbs defenceman from Riga Latvia has previously iced in the Elite Ice Hockey League with Manchester Storm.

Last season Birziņš split his time between his homeland Latvia and France, starting the season in Optibet Hokeja Liga with HK Mogo icing in 13 games and registering 5 assists. In November 2016 Birzins signed for Nice in the SaxoPrint Ligue Magnus going on to play in 21 games, scoring 1 goal and 5 assists.

During his time in the EIHL previously with Manchester Storm, Birziņš played in 38 games, scoring 7 goals and 17 assists.

Fife Flyers Head Coach Todd Dutiaume had the following to say on the signing of Birziņš "I had the opportunity to watch ricards play briefly a couple of seasons ago.

"The right side required shoring up and I feel that given the opportunity Ricards will be a guy who will settle into Fife quickly and provide us with not only the offence we have been looking for but also be a guy who is capable of logging big minutes night in and night out for us."

Ričards added “I am really excited to be returning to the Elite League!

"I remember during my time in Manchester that Fife were a really good team with some really great fans! It was always a great atmosphere in FIfe Ice Arena, I look forward to playing on the right side this time! will do my best to help the team succeed in every game”"

Ričards Birziņš will wear the #43 for the Flyers this season.
