Sunday evening saw the 2016/17 FiFab Fife Flyers take to the ice at Fife Ice Arena for the final time as they hosted Belfast Giants for a place at the Playoff Finals weekend at Nottingham Ice Centre. Flyers went into the game needing to win by 3 goals in order to secure an aggregate victory following a narrow 4-2 loss at the SSE Belfast Arena on Saturday evening.
A fiery opening period saw both teams press for the opening goal of the game and for the most part both netminders were up to everything being thrown at them. It was Belfast who netted the first goal of the game when former Flyers' player Matt Nickerson found space in front of Shane Owen's net to make it 1-0 to Belfast at 11:05.
Going into the dressing room at the end of the 1st period the score remained 1-0 to Belfast Giants on the night and 5-2 to Belfast on aggregate.
Into the 2nd period and Flyers got themselves on the goal sheet early on after Ryan Dingle put the puck across the line after a scramble in front of Stephen Murphy's net.
Despite bringing the aggregate score back to 2 goals, it was Belfast who went onto grab the next goal after a controversial hooking call on Sebastien Thinel put the Giants on the powerplay. Giants #25 Blair Riley put Belfast back in front on the night at 35:55 with a powerplay goal, before Chris Higgins made it 3-1 at 39:45 thanks to another powerplay goal.
Belfast wrapped up the series after Blair Riley scored at 44:06 to secure a 4-1 win on the night for Belfast and an 8-3 aggregate win.
