The FiFab Fife Flyers hosted east coast rivals the Dundee Stars on Saturday evening at Fife Ice Arena as they looked to extend their recent run of 5 wins from 6. Flyers welcomed Chase Schaber back in to the line-up, Schaber had been out of the team after taking a heavy hit during the hogmanay clash at Murrayfield against Edinburgh Capitals.
Despite the return of Schaber, Flyers were still not at full strength, as captain Ryan Dingle and defenceman Ric Jackman both missed out due to injury.
It took just 16 seconds for Flyers to take the lead as Chase Schaber found Sebastien Thinel behind the Dundee net, Thinel spotted Justin Fox alone in front of Joe Fallon and Fox fired a shot passed the Stars netminder to make it 1-0.
The opening period was end to end stuff but the next goal didn't come until late on when Dundee Stars capitalised on a disappointing Flyers powerplay to tie the game up with a shorthanded goal at 16:27.
Flyers got back in front when Justin Fox found time and space on the Flyers powerplay to make it 2-1 at 18:36.
Just as it looked as though Flyers would take a 1 goal lead into the dressing room at the end of the opening period, Dundee tied the game up after a scramble in front of Shane Owen's net. Kevin Bruijsten managed to squeeze the puck in to make it 2-2 at 19:28.
Into the 2nd period and both teams continued to press for the go ahead goal, and it finally came for Dundee at 34:22 when Stars captain Joey Sides fired a shot high passed Shane Owen in the Flyers net.
The best goal of game was still to come though, Fife Flyers looking to tie the game went on the attack as Matt Sisca broke into the Stars zone, with no support he held up the puck until a pinpoint pass found Brendan Brooks flying in, Brooks picked up the pass and fired the puck beyond Joe Fallon to make it 3-3 at 37:05.
A goalless 3rd period saw the game go in to 3 on 3 sudden death overtime and despite being in control for the majority of the play it was Dundee who scored to grab the extra point and take the win thanks to Felix-Antoine Poulin's 2nd goal of the evening at 62:59.
